Sight Recognition

Sight recognition refers to a readers’ ability to identify a word simply by looking at it, allowing them to read effortlessly and with greater understanding (MacArthur et al., 2015). Readers improve their sight recognition when they are able to efficiently apply their understanding of sound-symbol relationships in print (Ehri, 2014). Readers who have strong sight recognition skills have moved words into their long-term memory through repeated practice, allowing them to read the word by sight automatically without needing to decode it.
