LEAP stands for “Literacy Engagement Action Project.” LEAP is a statewide literacy enhancement program funded by a federal appropriation in the U.S. Department of Education. Our initial goal is to support K-12 students in the Northern Virginia region of the Commonwealth by developing a strong tutoring framework that can be used throughout Virginia.
Upon successful completion of the LEAP Tutoring Participant Program, you will:
- Earn badges to reflect successful completion of online tutor training
- Be prepared to effectively tutor K-12 students in literacy components across grade levels
- Be partnered with K-12 students in your community for literacy tutoring
- Conduct tutoring with LEAP-provided lesson plans and materials throughout the tutoring period (summer 2024)
All tutor applicants must:
- Have at least a high school diploma
- Pass a background check
- Have reliable transportation to assigned tutoring location(s) in your local Virginia community
- Be strongly committed to tutoring students for the duration of the session

Yes, all LEAP tutors will be compensated for both training and tutoring hours.

Yes, all LEAP tutors will be provided with a complete set of materials for tutoring that include lesson plans, text sets, and activities.
LEAP Cohort Session 1 is June 3 – June 7, and LEAP Cohort Session 2 is June 10 – June 14. Both sessions are 12 – 4 pm.
All tutoring will be conducted in person.
We do request that LEAP Tutors have easy access to transportation to travel to the tutoring site.
